Description

A delicious and versatile Indian flatbread that can be made plain or flavored with garlic, herbs, or cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons melted butter or ghee (for brushing)
  • 12 cloves minced garlic or 1 teaspoon garlic powder (for garlic naan)
  • 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro, mint, or parsley (for herb-infused naan)
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella or paneer (for cheese naan)
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour (for whole wheat naan)
  • Coconut yogurt and plant-based margarine (for vegan naan)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and instant yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until bubbly and activated.
  2. Then add all-purpose flour, salt, and Greek yogurt, mixing until a rough dough forms.
  3. Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Kneading develops gluten, giving your Naan its chewy texture.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1 hours or until it doubles in size.
  5. Divide the dough into 6-8 equal portions, then roll each piece into an oval or teardrop shape about 1/4 inch thick using a rolling pin.
  6. Heat a cast-iron skillet or non-stick pan over medium-high heat. Cook each naan for 2-3 minutes on one side until bubbles appear, then flip and cook the other side until browned and slightly charred.
  7. Brush the hot naan with melted butter or ghee immediately after cooking. Serve warm for best taste and texture.

Notes

  • For a richer taste, allow the dough to rise longer.
  • A grill can also be used for a smoky flavor.
