Description

A delicious and hearty pasta sauce made with Italian chicken sausage, ground turkey, and rich tomato sauce, perfect for your favorite pasta.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 pound Italian chicken sausage (hot or mild)
  • 1/2 pound ground turkey (93% fat)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 34 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1/8 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 15-ounce can tomato sauce
  • 1 6-ounce can tomato paste
  • 1 cup water or pasta water
  • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven. Add the ground turkey and sausage to the pan (be sure to remove the outer casing first) and break the links up into small pieces with a wooden spoon or spatula. Cook over medium-low heat for 7-10 minutes. Transfer the meat to a bowl and set aside.
  2. Add more oil to the pot if needed, then stir in the onions and sauté over low heat for about 5 minutes or until golden and turning soft. Add the garlic and sauté for another 2-3 minutes.
  3. Return the cooked meat back to the pot (juice and all) and stir. Add in the tomato sauce, tomato paste and water. Stir in the seasoning and sugar. Place lid on pot and simmer the sauce for about 20 minutes.
  4. While the sauce simmers, cook your pasta noodles. Don’t drain the noodles after you’ve cooked them al dente.
  5. Serve the sauce with cooked pasta and plenty of grated parmesan cheese.

Notes

  • This sauce can be made ahead of time and refrigerated for up to 3 days.
  • For added flavor, consider adding red wine to the sauce while simmering.
